BACKGROUND

The misuse of pesticide/ chemicals in agricultural production leads to many negative impacts on the health of farmers and product consumers, as well as environmental destruction and ecological imbalance. Most farmers do not have enough knowledge on new scientific technologies in production; as well as the benefits of applying this technology compared to conventional pesticides. Alternative Integrated Pest Management (IPM) technologies such as pheromones – biotechnologies that do not cause environmental problems and are less expensive than the use of conventional chemical pesticide products are not widely known to local farmers.

Through its planned actions, this project aims to contribute to the following Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):

OBJECTIVE

To substitute harmful chemical substances through the development and usage of pheromone-based pest control in Vietnamese rice plantations in cooperation with local partners resulting in an increase in the income of rice farmers. The project locations are Vinh Long and Dong Thap province in the Mekong Delta - the biggest rice production area of Vietnam.

IMPACT

300
farmers are qualified on Pheromone technology based Integrated Pest Management through the Farm Field Schools and receive certificates.
30
farmers, who participated in the baseline and final study, will reduce pest damages by 85% through the usage of pheromones compared to untreated plots, achieve at least the same yield compared to conventional treatment and increase their income by 10%.
30
experts (at least 10 are female) from local partners are qualified in pheromone technology pest management and can work as “FFS facilitators”.
6+
trails will be conducted in the selected provinces.
2
Universities implement a new module about pheromone technology in their curriculum.

IMPLEMENTATION

1. Local partnerships and 10 Farmer Filed Schools are established.

2. The rice borer mating disruption pheromonal gel is designed and tested on test plots in Vietnam.

3. Farmers and institutional partners enhanced their knowledge on usage of alternative pest control.

4. Stakeholders are informed about the project results and the registration of the pheromone products at the regional Departments of Agriculture & Rural Development (DARDs) took place.
